 The Great Pyramid

 Uxmal Panorama (9KB)

This is in fact the only photo you will find here that I didn't take. It is from the top of the Pyramid of the Magician and gives a perspective that I don't have in any of my photos. That is the Great Pyramid in the center, the Governor's Palace on the left, the House of the Turtles in the foreground, and, barely visible on the right hand side, the Dovecote.

Janet on the steps... you can't read the sign here but it simply says: "It's Dangerous to Go Up".

  Great Pyramid Temple (11KB)

This pyramid is one of the more recently excavated structures and only the front steps and the temple have had any significant restoration begun.

The temple on the top of the pyramid is called the Temple of the Guacamayas because of the many images of parrots carved into the stones. In the back of the temple, through the doorway you see here is a large scale Chaac mask recently uncovered by archeologists.

The Pyramid stands just under 100 feet high, which would put it a bit under the height of the Pyramid of the Magician. However, it was apparently in the process of being covered in order to build a higher structure when the expansion of Uxmal reached it's zenith and began to taper off.

Smaller Ruins all About

Like the Old Woman's House, this shot typifies what makes Uxmal intriguing. In the middle of restored large scale ruins, you might easily turn around and spot something like this through the trees. Don't know what it is, no restoration has been started on it, but it gives you the feeling of what it must have been like for the earlier visitors to this region who would have stumbled on ruins like this in the jungle.
