The Dovecote & The Old Woman's House
These ruins (along with the Cemetery Group)
illustrate the contrast that makes Uxmal unique: in addition to the large elaborate
structures, the great number of interesting ruins that are essentially unrestored... |
The Old Woman's House
From the journal:
"We made our way along some of the lesser trod trails looking first for some ruins
that were indicated on the (poor) maps that we had, and second, looking for some of the
structures you could see from the top of the Great Pyramid. |
| After some searching (and wandering through the bush), we found what was indicated on
the map as the "Old Womans House". This was one of the structures
associated with the legend surrounding Uxmal.
That is, that the Magicians Pyramid, the Governors Palace, and this place were
all erected in a single night by a magic dwarf (whose mother was the Old
Woman). What remains is a sizeable mound with only a section of facade standing on
one side and a small section standing at the top. |

To get to the top you have to pick your way among the rocks and underbrush but at the
top you get (once again) a nice vista of the other ruins." <<View from

The Dovecote
Odd & mysterious, the Dovecote (or House of the Doves) is all that
remains of what was once a large structure between two courtyards. The courtyards have
been cleared and are evident from the top of the Great
Pyramid, but the buildings that once comprised the surrounding walls are unexcavated. |

The facades of the roof combs have remnants of relief
carvings of faces but in general what remains of the whole complex is in poor condition. |

Pyramid. |
