The Governor's Palace

Governor's Palace (14KB)

The Palacio del Gobierno stands on the north side of the central square and, in addition to housing various governmental offices, also merits a visit as a working museum. The building is open all day and until 8:00 or 9:00 at night and while the architectural is notable, the upstairs stands on its own as an art gallery. There is also a tourist information office just inside the entrance.

The gallery that overlooks the plaza (also pictured here) is dominated by a series of huge murals that depict the Yucatan's violent history -  including panels portraying the War of the Castes, the burning of the Mayan books by the Franciscan monk Fray Landa, the sale of Mayan laborers into slavery on Cuban sugar plantations, and the sacking of Belize by pirates.
