The Coba Group
Just inside the entrance to the park (well, within the first 100 meters anyway) is the
first group of ruins, the Coba Group. |
 |

|
The area is dominated by the Iglesia pyramid, around 80 ft. high
- not as tall as Nohoch Mul but still impressive. The upper sections are in poor repair
and you can't climb this one... Adjacent to the pyramid there is a vaulted rock tunnel
that leads to another plaza. There is also a relatively intact ball court and the place
where you rent the bikes is directly across the trail. |

Between the entrance and the Nohoch Mul pyramid, you pass several
groupings of ruins. Las Pinturas Group is named for the paintings on the inside
and out of the temple seen here. Unfortunately you cannot climb the pyramid to get a
closer look. There are other structures surrounding this temple including a large stela
showing a warrior standing on two defeated enemies. |
There is also another semi-restored ball court just off the trail with
several recovered carved panels (pictured here). Piles
of sorted stones are also close by, setting the stage for future restorations.

Close to the Nohoch Mul group, there is the Xaibe'. This circular
structure (also called the Crossroad Pyramid) is around 30 feet high and is located at the
intersection of three of the sacbe's - Maya for 'white road' - that crisscross the area. |
