Looking Back on 1976

Mary Ethel and Walt (Gale) spent several weeks at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico during the Summer, learning about the history and culture of the country.

David, Phyllis, and children returned from two years in Saudi Arabia in June and are now stationed in Tacoma, Washington where David is doing a residency in Internal Medicine.

Barbara Ann, Hugh, and Miriah (Gibson) are still living in Illinois. Miriah began Kindergarten in September, and Barbara continues to be involved in community activities.

Mark, Becky, and Shelly welcomed the arrival of Matthew Gregory on November 11. Mark works for Western Auto in Searcy, doing car repair work at home evenings and days off.

Jonathan completed his third year at the University of Arkansas in the Spring. He has been working this fall as a change of pace from school; he still lives in Fayetteville.

Robin is in her second year at Harding. She is a Bison cheerleader, which involves all the football and basketball games at home and away. She also attends a few classes.

J.D. was honored this Fall as Harding's Distinguished Alumnus. He continues to write, and most recent off the press: The Holy Spirit and the Human Spirit; Evolution and the Scientific Method; the Genesis Account and a Scientific Test.

Mary traveled with Grandma and Grandpa Smart to New York to visit Mary Ethel following the Harding Lectures in October.

Looking back on 1977

Mary Ethel and Walt (Gale) took time from their teaching in New York to play host to family members in May and again in October, besides travelling with J.D. and Mary to the West Coast in August.

David, Phyllis and children are into their second year in Tacoma, Washington where David is doing a residency in Internal Medicine; Phyllis is working very successfully in Real Estate.

Barbara Ann and Hugh (Gibson) are adjusting to Miriah being in the first grade. Their house is the family gathering place now for Christmas because of its central location in Illinois.

Mark and Becky gave their precious Shelly back to God in April and have demonstrated great faith and acceptance. Greg -- one year old in November -- is a joy. Mark is a student again at Harding -- certifying to teach.

Jonathan is living and working in Nashville, Tennessee, enjoying a measure of financial independence after three hard working years at the University.

Robin is in her third year at Harding. She worked in the Summer at one of Searcy's hospitals and continues to work there part time.

J.D. teaches half a load at Harding, continues to write; he travelled to Anchorage, Alaska in August to lecture on Mormonism. Fresh from the publisher: Communism Killed Kennedy; You Believe.

Mary spent almost as much time travelling as she did at home - California in January, Canada in April for the Smart's 60th Anniversary, New York in May, Alaska in August, New York, Boston and Washington in October -- this is a very big, beautiful country!

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures for ever!
