Back to the Trailhead...

We made it back to the Saddle somewhere around 2:00PM and stayed long enough to have a bite to eat and gather our stuff that we had left at the base camp. We cut this rest stop short both because of the long hike still ahead and because the changing weather began to look threatening (although you can't tell it from this picture - another indication as to how quickly the weather can change.

The hike down was relatively uneventful for us. It started raining after we got past the initial climb down from the saddle and we had rain and thunder for most of the way to Lupine Meadows. (Notice the threatening clouds in the photos above.) George got us into gear with some techniques on speed hiking which allowed us to cover a lot of ground (and made my legs REALLY sore the next day) and by the time we had past the Meadows the weather and walking had improved.

Columbine...

We made it the rest of the way out without incident and in good time, arriving somewhere around 6:00PM as I recall - exhausted, a little sore, but highly satisfied.

The REAL end of the trail for me... After camping out all week and sleeping on the ground, I stayed the night at the Climbers Ranch. They have a number of cabins (like the one on the left - the structure in the middle is the cooking shelter) where you can get a bunk and a shower. And while the bunk is just a space to spread your sleeping bag & mat, it IS off the ground and the hot shower is AWESOME!!!
