Starting Out...Of course the trek starts out on trails like any backcountry paths... From the Lupine Meadows trailhead a short drive from the Exum headquarters it'll take you several hours of walking to begin to get out of the trees. This is also the trailhead for Surprise Lake and Amphitheater Lake trails so you can expect some company when you first start out. |

An hour or so in you'll pass the junction where that trail branches off to the right so, while there may still be a number of hikers you should begin to have a little more of the trail to yourself.

Before heading up into Garnet Canyon, you will navigate a series of switchbacks across more open areas that begin to give you some dramatic views back over Bradley and Taggart Lakes. |
Reaching the treeline...
It doesn't take long for the thinning trees to reach a more distinct treeline and the views ahead begin to give you the feeling that you DO have some serious climbing ahead!... |
