Machu Picchu

The last day of our trek and the culmination of our tour - Machu Picchu. Even after seeing such a variety of sites and vistas leading up to this point, Machu Picchu does not disappoint.

This section has five pages, mostly photos, arranged roughly in the sequence we went through them - East to West.

Machu Picchu

From the Guardhouse overlooking the site, through the Eastern sector (including the Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Condor) to the Sacred Plaza; then the Western Urban sector with its open plaza; finally a page on the hike up Huayna Picchu (that's the almost vertical looking peak overlooking the ruins seen in the cutout above - braved by only Josh and myself. Definitely gluttons for punishment after four days on the trail!). Lastly there is a page with a few shots of the trip out, Aguas Calientes and the Return to Cuzco.

Llama & Steps (12KB)

Stone Wall & Path (13KB)

A distinct advantage of trekking with an experienced guide: as we made our way along the trail at each stop Mauro gave us us more and more background on Inca life, society,   customs and cosmology, so by the time we reached our destination, we had a pretty solid understanding of the various things we would see.

Condor Rock & Terraces (11KB)

<<< A solid rock overhang perched above the lower terraces. At the crest of this formation is a representation of the surrounding mountain peaks cut into the native rock.

>>> Ceremonial bath built into a split in the staircase just below the Temple of the Sun.
