Monastery

This is one of the places that was recommended to me by the 'Tourist Police'. It is a few blocks off of the Plaza de Armas and definitely worth the time for a visit.

One of the oldest structures in the city and one of the few that has survived repeated earthquakes (although there is some damage on the inside that was pointed out by the guide), the church was consecrated in 1673.

(You can't really tell from the picture at this size, but there are two little kids inside the fountain!>>)

Cathedral San Francisco (13KB)

San Francisco Mosaic (9KB) Some of the building (and artwork) is in the process of being restored although you can see that there is much more that needs to be done.

Some of the artwork that remains is quite impressive including a large mural of the last supper that is unique in a couple of ways. First of all, not sure if Jesus and the apostles would be dining on guinea pig. Secondly, if you notice Judas sitting to the left of Jesus has a devil blowing his evil breath down Judas' neck.

These are shots from the courtyard area.

The Catacombs

As had been described to me, beneath the cathedral are catacombs which are included in the tours that are given throughout the day. There are chambers beneath the main areas of the church and you have to go through some low narrow passages to get to them.

San Francisco Catacombs (8KB) The guide that led the group I was in conducted the tour in Spanish. (I believe that English speaking tour guides are also available.) I could follow what she was saying pretty well but I had to ask a guy that was quietly translating for his wife if I had heard her correctly when she said that there were remains of over 25,000 people in these catacombs. That was what she said. The Ossuary (11KB)
The photo on the left shows a catwalk that you walk along... All of the chambers you see there are filled with human bones. The photo on the right is the Ossuary and I don't know how deep it is but you see the amount of bones that are visible.
