The Ruins & the Mountains
The backdrop of the mountains and the Urubamba River valley are part of
what makes this place exceptional. While the pictures don't do it justice, hopefully you
get some idea of that here...

While we left our campsite with rain slickers on, by the time we got to the ruins the
rain had stopped and things started to clear up... With essentially three sites to explore
(the upper and lower temples and the waterfalls) we went straight through the ruins to the
waterfalls and worked our way back. I don't know if it was the season or the time of day
but we had the place essentially all to ourselves, only seeing a couple of hikers coming
up the path via the 'Short Trail' from the river below. <<< The

Although similar to Intipata in terms of the terracing down the
mountainside, that's as far as the similarity goes. There are many more buildings and the
workmanship is of a higher level. In addition there is the sequence of ceremonial baths
and the temple structures. With the waterfall in the background, most likely the whole
focus of this place (in addition to food production) was in the worship of water. If you
need to be convinced that this was an ideal place for this kind of thing, just visit the Waterfalls...
