Up to Dead Woman's Pass

Trail Up to DW Pass (11KB)

I had slept pretty well early but a bit more fitfully later on (the altitude I think, because I was certainly tired) so I was ready to get up by the 6:00AM 'wakeup call'. I gotta tell you, having hot water, coffee (and/or coca tea) brought to the tent first thing in the morning is DEFINITELY the way to do this!

The Group in the Rain (9KB) Even with the early start (we were on the trail by 7:00 or 7:30) there was a steady mist for the couple of hours of walking up and up it took to get to the pass.

Who SAID this was easier than yesterday!!...

The Dead Woman's Pass is the highest point on the Inca Trail - some 4200 meters (or 13650 feet) above sea level. It apparently takes its name from the arrangement of the terrain which is said to represent a woman lying on her back. The trail takes you over her belly and if you look at the picture at the top of the page you can see the 'twin peaks' that are the woman's breasts.

We took a short break here but it was wet and a little cold so we didn't stay for long before heading down into the Pacamayo valley and on to Runcu Raccay...
