Patallacta

Patallacta (16KB)

Patallacta is the first major ruin that you come across, but following the trail from KM82 we got no closer to it than the view you see here. The ruins are placed in typical Inca fashion, at the junction of three valleys. The trail from KM88 (the traditional start of the Machu Picchu trek) comes around the corner from the left, up in front of these ruins and across the waterfall you see at the lower left of this picture. That's Yugi on the right in the red windbreaker taking a picture of the ruins...

Huillca Raccay - Pre Inca Site (11KB)

Huillca Raccay, ruins that pre-date the Inca. On the left, the view back up the Urubamba river valley in the direction from which we came.

The Hills are Alive! (17KB)

The Hills are Alive!....

... just NOT with the sound of music! This is the crest of the plateau overlooking Patallacta and there was a nice breeze coming up the valley and over the top of the hill so it was a refreshing place to sit down, take a break and learn about the Inca government and society.

Of course, another reason why this is a good place to take a break is that (for the day at least), it's all Uphill from here!...
