Miami is the home of Tito Puente Jr., son of the king of Latin music, Tito Puente, and an
entertainer in his own right. His recommendations focus on the Miami Beach area and
include: Lodging: on the beach at the Delano or the Raleigh, in the
heart of Miami Beach.
Breakfast: News Cafe' - when you've just gotten up, or after a
late-nighter.
Lunch: Crab House on the 79th Street Causeway, with a view of Biscayne
Bay. For Cuban: Yuca.
Dinner: Lario's on the Beach on Ocean Drive (I would agree!).. Mezzanotte
on Washington and 12th. Late night: Pucci's Pizza, David's Cafe (Cuban
food).
Nightlife: Bash in Miami Beach which is co-owned by Sean Penn. Late
night to Liquid. Also, on Washington Avenue Cream, the Living Room at the Strand,
& the Cameo Theater. On the strip at Ocean Drive: I Paparazzi.
Beaches: Key Biscayne (not as crowded as South Beach); Boca Raton Resort
for a private beach; Haulover Beach (for even LESS clothing to be seen than South
Beach!).
And.. while we're at it...
Key West...
Another South Florida destination featured in the past year was Kelly McGillis' Key
West. She has lived there for over 10 years and owns a local restaurant.
Lodging: Her recommendation is a guest house - there are plenty in Key
West (the Key West Innkeepers Association: 800-492-1911). For hotels: the Pier
House, Casa Marina and the Hyatt.
Breakfast: Camille's to sit down and read the paper, or Sandy's Cafe for cafe'
con leche and cheese bread.
Lunch: Blue Heaven, Moe's.
Dinner: the first recommendation is Kelly's of course (HER restaurant!).
Cafe Marquesa, Louie's Backyard.
Nightlife: No shortage of choices here. Start off at Mallory Square
for sunset and the street show. Then head down Duval Street: Hog's Breath,
Margaritaville (Jimmy Buffet's place, also good for a Cheeseburger in paradise!), Captain
Tony's, Sloppy Joe's (and if you've made through all that, you will have successfully
survived the 'Duval Crawl'!). For dancing: Epoch or Diva's.
For the local sights, take the Old Town Trolley or the Conch Train. There's
Hemingway's home where the descendants of his many cats still roam the grounds. There are
the Shipwreck Historeum and Mel Fisher's museum of shipwreck artifacts. There are
some beaches (Smather's Beach) but like most of the keys, they are not the best in
Florida.
