Of course there is more to the 'Glades than gators and birds... The water holds its own wide array of life. I wouldn't begin to guess at the variety of fish and this turtle seems at home... Also around, but much more scarce are mammals such as the endangered Florida Panther (actually found in the Great Cypress Swamp just to the north of the Everglades Park).  More photos follow and there are some associated links at the bottom of the page.

You DO sometimes see other animals in the park.  On the left, a pair of otters sneak past a couple sitting in a shelter. (The ranger said that it's quite rare to see them.) On the right, a deer comes close to the observation deck (at Shark Valley... see the next page).

  • Of course the National Park Service is a good place to start. The Everglades section is comprehensive with all the stuff you would expect - hours, directions, fees, activities, facilities, a map, an Annual Report, and etc. and etc.
  • The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel's Everglades Guide - a good source for information about the Everglades. Park information, history, activities, a map of the park, and more.
  • The Everglades Information Network - maintained by Florida International University, this site has loads of academic data and further links.
  • Also from FIU, the Everglades Case Study was developed with a grant from the National Science foundation and was put together by the Environmental Engineering Department.  While there is a lot of info about the engineering of the wetlands, there is also introductory material to the Everglades and wetlands in general, and a lot of photos... recommended.
  • The Friends of the Everglades - This is the organization that was founded by Marjory Stoneman Douglas (author of  'The River of Grass') in the 1960's.  Information about Ms. Douglas and more links.
  • The GORP (Great Outdoor Recreation Pages) Page on the Everglades
  • The Everglades 50th Anniversary Page - The park's 50th anniversary was in 1997 but the site is still a good resource with the Everglades Magazine Online and an interesting section of historical photos.
