St. Stephen's Basilica

Like many places in Budapest, the outside of the St. Stephen's Basilica is in the process of being restored.  And, like the Parliament Building, although it looks to be much older, this cathedral was only completed in 1905.  The largest cathedral in Budapest, it suffered some damage in World War II but remained structurally intact and the interior (for the most part) has been restored to spectacular condition, as can be seen in the photos below.

Shrine Detail  (16KB)The interior of the church is decorated with the works of prominent Hungarian artists. Here also is housed the most revered relic in the Hungarian church:  the mummified right hand of Saint Stephen, kept in a ancient ornamental glass box (or so they say... WE didn't see it!).
